Katerina Stathis : Associate Artist
Katerina Stathis is a music-therapist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. She studied a Bachelor of Music (Music Therapy) and a Masters of Social Work and has worked in public health and education settings across her career with groups and individuals promoting the use of music for self-expression and wellbeing. She is currently studying a Graduate Diploma in Composition.
As a composer, Katerina uses a variety of methodologies from soundscapes laden with electronically fused western classical timbres, to collaborative works for dance, to large scale installation work to multi-channel diffusion. More recently she has been performing electronic sets using hardware synths, effects pedals and drum machines. Her current practice unveils universal visceral themes conveying a gamut of emotions using a blend of analogue synthesisers, found sound and acoustic instruments. Katerina released her debut album Delusions & Heroines in early 2020, a sophomore release Refract: Covid Soundscapes Vol 1 released in August 2020 and her most recent release in August 2021 as a single, Hope Springs Eternal. Her compositions have been included in various compilations. Recent solo work saw her perform an eight-channel diffusion work Opus MESS for Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio's Sonorous VII series at the iconic Newport Substation and at the Primrose Potter Studio for 'Tangles: New Modular Music' curated by Robin Fox.
Katerina has worked in collaboration with Melbourne based dance company Lucy Guerin Inc. composing the soundtrack for the work, How to Be Us, commissioned by the Australian Ballet for Dance X Festival. She composed the soundtrack for Cloudland, an immersive light installation work by visual artist Chi-Uh Star which premiered at the Queen Victoria Women's Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She is recent addition to the Australian Music Centre's represented artists.
Katerina is one third of the composer collective STATHIS//DAVEY//KIM whose highlights have included 2 world premiere installations and one world premier synthesiser orchestra work:
- Co-composers of "Hypnos Cave" (Robin Fox, Soma Lumia) at MONA FOMA, Launceston 2020
- Creators/composers of "Chairway to Heaven", a 20-voiced suspended symphony in the sky (@ Launceston gorge chairlift) premiered at MONA FOMA, Launceston 2021
- Commission for quadraphonic work for MESS Synthesiser Orchestra's Now or Never Festival, Naarm 2023.
- A Fleeting Chorus - Commission for development for Now or Never festival, Naarm 2023.
- Distraction- commissioned triple stereo performance for Now or Never festival, Naarm 2025
STATHIS//DAVEY//KIM were recent recipients of the Banff Centre for creativity Artist's scholarship attending the Soundweavings Intercultural Music Residency 2025 under the faculty head Haruka Fujii.
Katerina is one sixth of the new electro acoustic ensemble 'Golden Sands'. A debut performance for Open House Melbourne saw the ensemble perform 'How Do We Remain', a six- hour durational sound installation for vintage electronics, software acoustic instruments and custom ultrasonic kinetic speakers, designed by sound artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey, for the audience to be within. Golden Sands performed an additional five hour durational piece, All Things Listen, at Tadao Andao's MPavillion. The work comprised of new improvisational compositional forms following a period of creative development with internationally acclaimed sound artist and composer Ros Bandt.
