Alexander Yee : Associate Artist
Alexander Yee is a Sydney-based Australian composer and pianist
of Chinese-Korean descent. He was classically trained in the
piano from the age of four, and in the clarinet from the age of
nine. Throughout his education, he gained experience playing and
performing as part of choral ensembles, wind and marching bands,
as well as big band and jazz ensembles.
At age fourteen, he began to compose, performing an original
piano work as part of the 2019 Sport for Jove Shakespeare
Carnival Grand Final. At age eighteen, he composed 'Be With Me
Lord', an original worship composition for voice and piano
inspired by his faith journey and battle with mental health. In
2023, following a fracture in his right, Alexander began to write
nine original solo piano compositions in the Western Classical
style, meant to pay tribute to his formative artists such as
Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Satie, Glass,
Richter, Tarrega, and Nyman. Initially envisioned to be a
showcase of his playing ability and range, the collection spans
multiple styles including that of Romanticism, Impressionism, and
Minimalism while also incorporating elements from Spanish
Classical Guitar music and Orientalism.
These pieces would later become his debut album, 'Homage'
(released 4 October 2024) through Big Round Records. Enamoured by
music's ability to entrap narrative and emotion to a higher and
more nuanced level than the written and spoken word, Alexander
set to the task of having each of the nine compositions be
programmatic in nature - telling stories from the Bible, his own
faith journey and personal experiences, as well as those from his
own creative writing projects, set in the fantasy world of
Katave. Throughout the collection, leitmotifs indicating specific
themes, characters, and events can be found, with a high degree
of inspiration from film composers such as Howard Shore, John
Williams, and Joe Hisaishi.
Alexander is currently working on a project scoring his
novelisation of a DND campaign he wrote and ran from June 2025 to
December 2025. Featuring guitar, clarinet, and synthesisers in
addition to his ever-present piano, Alexander seeks to explore
and evoke an expansive array of cultural aesthetics and musical
colours to evoke narrative, tension, and emotion.
