Paul Stanhope's Fantasia on a theme by Vaughan Williams comes to
us tonight from the prestigious Takemitsu competition in Tokyo,
where it won first prize in 2004 - the first Australian piece to
even make it to the finals. Natalie Shea spoke to Paul about the
experience.
Certain Resonances
Well, it wasn't quite as drawn out as Australian Idol, but it must have been a nail-biting experience all the same: five prizes announced in reverse order. 'Once the second prize was announced and my name hadn't been read out, I knew I'd won then,' says Paul, 'and I remember at that moment sort of shrinking down into my seat, not really wanting to deal with everything, it just seemed all quite overwhelming.'
