Carl Vine's fourth symphony is about the experience of
discontinuity, and as such marks radical shift in the development
of his musical language.
Vine's symphonic output began in 1986 with the Microsymphony,
commissioned, like the present work, by the Sydney Youth
Orchestra. 1986 also saw the composition of Love Song, for
