Brendan Colbert was born in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1956. After moving to Melbourne in
the mid-1970’s he performed with various experimental progressive-rock/fusion
bands as keyboard player and songwriter before starting private composition studies
in the mid-1980’s, initially with Brenton Broadstock & later with Riccardo Formosa.

Major commissions include those from Symphony Australia - for the West Australian
Symphony Orchestra - and US flautist Linda Wetherill (both with assistance from the
Australia Council). These saw the premieres of Eirenicon in Perth (2000), and Shades
of Futures Past - concerto for flute/alto flute/piccolo and small orchestra - in New
York (2004). Many others have commissioned, performed, or recorded his works
(including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Duo Contemporain, ELISION, Speak
Percussion, Barrie Webb, Peter Neville, Marshall McGuire, Carl Rosman, Michael
Kieran Harvey), and his works have been performed and broadcast around Australia, in
Europe, the U.K., and the U.S.A. Recent premieres include Solitary (bass flute, Linda
Wetherill, New York, July 2007), PNEUma (percussion duo, SPEAK Percussion,
Melbourne, November 2007), and Sphinx (for 10 players, ELISION / Mark Knoop,
Melbourne, August 2008). Future premieres include Alter(n)ations (for piano,
harpsichord and vibraphone; Contemporary Keyboard Society, Montreal, 2008/9)
and Semplice.
