Program note: Thomas Reiner's "...Love Is..."

  • © Thomas Reiner
  • Source: Produced for and provided by Melbourne Composer's League

Thomas Reiner's music has been performed, broadcast and recorded in many
countries, and by some of the leading exponents of contemporary music. Most of his
works are published with the Australian Music Centre. Recordings of his music are
released on several CDs and have received critical acclaim.

‘... Love is ...’ is one of five songs entitled From Dawn to Spring. The songs are settings
of poems by the North American 20th Century poet e. e. cummings (apparently he liked
to spell his name with lower-case letters). Composed in 1984, the music tries to
capture and build upon the playfulness with which the poems explore both language
and meaning.

love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail
it is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea
love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive
it is most sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky
e.e.cummings
