Program note: George Dreyfus's "Restless"

George Dreyfus is one of Australia's most renowned composers. Born in Germany in
1928 and arriving in Melbourne in 1939, he began his musical life as a bassoonist. But
from the mid-1950s he came to concentrate increasingly on composition. He has
written four operas, two symphonies, dozens of other orchestral and chamber works,
and scores for over 60 film and television productions, including his best-known work,
the theme from the ABC TV series Rush. In 2008, Dreyfus celebrated his 80th
birthday, a milestone which was marked with a concert in the Hawthorn Town Hall
attended by 900 people. On October 29th, Rush was performed by the MSO at the
acoustic voicing concert of the new Recital Center, becoming the first piece of
Australian music heard at this prestigious new venue.
The Melbourne Composers League is happy to continue the celebrations of the
eightieth birthday of George Dreyfus, which have delighted Melbourne audiences.
This is the world premiere of George’s new guitar work Restless.
