Program note: Colin Brumby's "Sound Bank Overture"

  • program note by the compsoer

My South Bank Overture was commissioned by the Queensland Performing Arts Trust under the (then) Chairman, Donald Munro, for the Royal Gala Concert that marked the official opening of the Performning Arts Centre in Brisbane

Given in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Kent in April 1985, my overture opened the programme which featured the Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Werner Andreas Albert.

The other works on the programme were Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no 1 in B flat minor with Roger Woodward as soloist, and the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz.

My overture, cast in first-movement form, was conceived as a happy piece for a happy occasion.

With that performance also went the honour of being the first piece of music officially to be heard in the new Concert Hall.
