The Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address is the single most important national forum for contemporary music discourse, which honours one of Australia’s great international composers and provides a platform to discuss important issues facing contemporary music today. In the spirit of the great Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks, an outstanding advocate of Australian music delivers the Address each year, challenging the status quo and raising issues of importance in new music.

All Music For Everyone: Working Towards Gender Equality and Empowerment in Australian Music Culture

Recent data overwhelmingly points to inherent problems in the Australian music industry, demonstrating that women and non-binary individuals do not experience the same access to opportunities as men working as music creators. The same data also tells us that many practitioners do not believe such problems exist, despite evidence to the contrary. In the 2018 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address, Professor Cat Hope (Head of the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music, Monash University) will examine the current situation for music creators in Australia by bringing together some current debates and proposing appropriate actions to improve inclusion and opportunity for all people.

The 2018 Address will also feature the premiere of a new work composed by Dobromila Jaskot (WA) and Cat Hope (VIC) for voice and electronics, performed by Karina Utomo (VIC). Jaskot is a Polish-born, Perth- based composer who writes electro-acoustic, instrumental and theatre music and has an active profile as an educator and pianist. Utomo is the singer for Melbourne band heavy/sludge metal band High Tension, and was also singer in Canberra post hardcore band The Young And the Restless (2005-2009). She is a soloist in Hope's new opera, ‘Speechless’, that will premiere at the Perth Festival in February 2019.
