Event Details

Allegri Ensemble, directed by Andrew Bainbridge, is pleased to present a colourful Christmas program of favourite carols and festive songs featuring excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s atmospheric youthful masterwork “A Boy Was Born”.

Other works on the program include John Rutter’s “Shepherd’s Pipe carol” and “What Sweeter Music”; Bob Chilcott’s “The Shepherd’s Carol”; John Tavener’s “The Lamb”; Orlando Gibbons’ “This is the record of John” and Thomas Tallis’ wonderful extended motet “Videte miraculum”. We will also present mid-20th century classics by William Mathias, Colin Brumby, Stephen Jackson, Andrew Carter, William Walton, Richard Rodney Bennett, interspersed with Robert Parsons’ sublime “Ave Maria” and Samuel Scheidt’s rousing “Ein Kind’ geborn”. Audience members will be invited to join in singing “O come all ye faithful” and “The First Nowell” in well‐loved arrangements by Sir David Willcocks and the program will conclude with a rousing rendition of William James’ Australian carol “Merry Christmas”.

Allegri Ensemble is delighted to be joined by Joshua Ryan, one of Australia’s best young organists. Joshua is an Honours student at the University of Sydney Conservatorium and winner of the 2018 Sydney University Medal in Music. He has been organ scholar at Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral, St Stephen’s Church and Christ Church St Laurence, and works as a freelance performer, accompanist and teacher in Sydney and Canberra.

We hope you will join us for a stylish start to Christmas!
