Event Details
At 27-year-old pianist/composer Aaron Choulai has, in recent years, become one of the more in-demand musicians, both nationally and internationally. He has collaborated with artists such as Ben Monder, Jim Black and Joel Frahm while living in New York, and recently back here, has directed the cross-cultural Papua New Guinean collaboration 'We don't dance for no reason'. He has been awarded the 'Young Musician of the Year' at the 2006 Australian Jazz Awards, and was named 'one of the most influential melbournites' in 2007. The Trio, featuring Sam Anning (acoustic bass) and Rory McDougall (drums), is one of the newer projects from Aaron Choulai. Playing mostly originals, the band has been on a steady pace of playing and recording since their first European tour in 2008. Currently based in Japan for a two-year artist-in-residence position, Choulai’s brief visit will launch the release of the Trio’s debut CD.
