About Music (lecture) - Albrecht Dümling (musicologist & music critic, Berlin)
When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, a great number of people, often Jews, were forced to leave the country. For most refugees it was difficult to find a new home. Although Australia in general did not welcome musicians, a number of them eventually arrived here. My talk will focus on refugee artists who performed at the Sydney Conservatorium. Their performances were crucial experiences for them, in some cases marking the end of a career, in others involving a new start. Those artists brought to Australia their unique contributions in dance, Lied, chamber music and theatre.

Albrecht Dümling, a musicologist and music critic in Berlin, created the exhibition ‘Entartete Musik: A critical reconstruction (Düsseldorf 1938/1988)’, which travelled to more than 60 places world-wide. Since 1990 he is chairman of ‘musica reanimata‘, a society for the promotion of composers persecuted by the Nazis, and was awarded for these activities in 2007 with the European Cultural Prize KAIROS. In 2000-2004 he conducted a research project on German-speaking refugee musicians in Australia and published the results in his book The Vanished Musicians. Jewish Refugees in Australia (German 2011, English 2016).
