Event Details

We explore the beauty of strings in an exclusive program for Melbourne Recital Centre that ranges from lively dances to ethereal reveries.

Richard Meale's beatific Cantilena Pacifica was written as a eulogy, with the violin soaring lyrically over a respectful pianissimo from the orchestra.

Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is a musical conjuror, famous for his ‘Roman Trilogy’ which celebrated the beauty and drama of that great city. He also held an affinity with music from the past, and in Ancient Airs and Dances he evokes the brilliance of the Baroque and Renaissance.

Pēteris Vasks’ Viatore is music that will move you. Full of depth and grace, it’s written for 11 solo strings and is a perfect fit for our orchestra of soloists. Benjamin Britten’s thrilling Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge is the climax of the program. A tribute to his teacher, it was the work that brought him international fame.
