Event Details

Following the sold out premiere in the Blue Mountains, this is the Sydney debut of Lloyd Swanton’s new suite of 12 compositions featuring a stellar 12-piece ensemble. Ambon draws from the secret, coded POW diary of Swanton’s uncle Stuart, part of the ill-fated Gull Force sent to defend Ambon, Indonesia in World War II. Ambon brings together hymns, work song, gospel, military marches, island music and jazz, to create something of beauty out of great horror, in the process offering us insight into a little-known tragedy in our recent past.

Lloyd Swanton (bass) Paul Cutlan (bass clarinet, saxophones, recorder) Sandy Evans (saxophone) James Greening (trombone, cornet, pocket trumpet, tuba) Alex Silver (trombone) James Eccles (viola) Jon Pease (guitar) Michel Rose (pedal steel guitar) Chuck Morgan (ukulele) Fabian Hevia (cajon, percussion) Ron Reeves (kendang, percussion) Nic Cecire (drums)
