Syzygy 2018 – Hommage à M. Debussy
Claude Debussy is widely regarded as the father of modern classical music. In the centenary year of his death, Syzygy takes the final three sonatas of Debussy as points of departure for three concerts that explore the fantastical and multi-faceted contemporary legacy of this bold, exploratory musician. In the pioneering spirit of Debussy, we also include a newly-commissioned Australian work in each concert.
Concert 3 - Antiques Epigraphs
Debussy prophetically called his final sonatas ‘tombstones’. The forward-looking violin sonata was to be his last, hinting at a new vista of uncovered sounds he was never able to explore further. Here, Turnage and Kurtag contribute their own tombstones – Turnage writes a moving elegy to his friend Christopher van Kampen, while Kurtag embeds a web of symbols and secret references in his set of miniatures that pay tribute to the life and work of Robert Schumann. This concert also features a premiere by composer Lachlan Skipworth.
Claude Debussy - Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor
György Kurtág - Hommage a Schumann
Mark Anthony Turnage - Cortege for Chris
Lachlan Skipworth - New work (Untitled)
Featured non-Australian music: Debussy, Kurtag, Mark Anthony Turnage
