Event Details

Much-loved Australian composer Miriam Hyde’s Trio for flute, oboe and piano, sets the tone of neoclassical elegance in this program of contrasts. We are also excited to present the Australian premiere of American Paul Moravec’s zesty ensemble work Cool Fire. Its title suggests the diverse emotional range we traverse later in Gabriel Pierné’s opulent Piano Quintet. Although not a household name, Pierné was a multi-talented musician, organist and conductor whose output was influenced by some of the greats of the French Romantic tradition including César Franck. These treats are paired with Mozart, whose Oboe Quartet, a beautifully poised and highly virtuosic piece of chamber music, resembles a concerto for oboe. This quartet encapsulates both the cool and fiery elements of our program, namely by Mozart’s balanced classical structures infused with virtuosic musical passion.

Performers: Ian Munro, piano; Dene Olding, violin; Dimity Hall, violin; Irina Morozova, viola; and Julian Smiles, cello with guest artists Lisa Osmialowski, flute; and Huw Jones, oboe

Featured non-Australian music: Paul Moravec | Cool Fire Wolfgang Mozart | Quartet in F K370/368b Gabriel Pierné | Piano Quintet in E minor Op.41
