Event Details

The Australia Ensemble launches its 2018 program with an examination of the deep emotional forces that serve as the foundation for enriching musical works.

The Ensemble begins with Beethoven’s Trio Op. 11, in which the lively agitation of clarinet, cello and piano serve as an optimistic platform from which the subsequent repertoire descends. Dean’s Sextet, Old Kings in Exile, is rife with emotional turmoil, with the undulating undercurrents of bass drum and harsh winds embodying a profound sense of despair and loss. The war-torn life of Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff offers an enriched perspective of artistic clarity – a composer of considerable promise whose life was tragically cut short in a WWII concentration camp. His Concertino for flute, viola and double bass is at times sweet, nostalgic, and edgy. This is complemented by the seething raw energy of Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 8, in dedication to ‘victims of fascism and the war.’
