Sally’s Arabesque (2008) – Colin Spiers (b. 1957)
Sally Walker – flute; Colin Spiers – piano
Sally’s Arabesque for flute and piano was written for Newcastle Conservatorium’s Lecturer in Flute, Sally Walker, as a ‘demonstration piece showcasing some of the instrument’s many and varied timbral characteristics and playing techniques. The outer sections of its three-part form highlight the flute’s natural abilities in cantabile melodic playing, as well as its ability to negotiate arpeggio passagework and (at the end) harmonics, while the middle section features such techniques as double, triple and flutter tonguing. Although the piano appears to play mainly a supporting role, providing the accompanying arabesques to which the title alludes, it also shares the melodic material in the last section, which fact, along with its busy textures, contributing to the elevation of the work to the status of duo in the true sense of the word.
