Wal Mart is a new instrumental quartet which strives to blend all four members' record collections seamlessly into two sets of music. This ensures a night of diverse material ranging from swinging jazz to South American rhythms, modern slants on standards and possibly some passing references to a less enlightened listening past. The band comprises drummer Ben VanderWal, tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson, percussionist Javier Fredes and acoustic bassist Sam Anning.
The unusual 'Noah's Ark' instrumentation of two melodic instruments and two percussionists means that the music will be a great flood of rhythmic intensity and a haven of harmonic sparseness. The emphasis of the music is interplay and discovery, and the members of Wal Mart invite one and all to join them for a spontaneous and occasionally madcap ride of musical what ifs.
