The festival begins with a celebration of Spring and the natural world. Gifted young violinist Cameron Hill returns to Port Fairy to perform Beethoven at his most genial: the beloved Violin Sonata No. 5, known as the ‘Spring’ sonata. Leading didjeridu player William Barton joins forces with the Australian String Quartet, performing two compositions inspired by the Australian outback: Petrichore, evoking the release of natural oils after rainfall hits the rocks of the earth, and Birdsong at Dusk. The concert concludes with Schumann’s brilliant Piano Quintet, dating from 1842, his year-long Spring. This concert is of chamber music, performed by the Australian String Quartet and Festival Director Anna Goldsworthy.

Featured non-Australian music: Beethoven, Schumann
