A thrilling, unique experience of creation, expression and adventure.

2015 ARIA Award-winner for ‘Best Classical Album’, pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska returns to Melbourne Recital Centre with Elena Kats-Chernin, one of Australia’s great composers (Eliza Aria, The Divorce) in a thrilling, unique experience of creation, expression and adventure.

Performing four hands at the piano and improvising live, second-to-second, the duo traverse the wondrous catalogue of Kats-Chernin’s music, presenting well-loved works in an utterly new light and unveiling new treasures in this intimate tete-a-tete with the composer and her long-time collaborator.

As one of Australia’s foremost contemporary composers, widely acknowledged and awarded around the world, Elena Kats-Chernin attracts commissions from the world’s leading opera, ballet, and theatre companies and festivals including Komische Oper Berlin, Nederlands Dans Theater and the San Francisco Ballet. She has created works in nearly every genre, from orchestral compositions to chamber and choral, among them pieces for Ensemble Modern, the Vienna Boys Choir, Michael Collins, Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Melbourne, Queensland, Tasmanian, and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, as well as five chamber operas – including Opera Australia’s very first opera for television, The Divorce (2015) – featuring Kate Miller-Heidke, Lisa McCune, Marina Prior, and Meow Meow – and soundtracks to three silent films.

Tamara-Anna Cislowska is one of Australia’s foremost pianists, winner of many awards both here and overseas including the 2015 ARIA Award for ‘Best Classical Album’, for her recent recording of Peter Sculthorpe’s complete piano works which earned 5 star reviews in BBC Music Magazine, where it was ‘Recording of the Month- Instrumental’ (January 2015) and described as “Australian piano gold”, in Limelight magazine and Fine Music magazine. Other prizes include the 2012 APRA-AMCOS Art Music Award for ‘Performance of the Year (ACT)‘and Italy’s Rovere d’Oro.

This is a program that is sure to delight audiences already familiar with the composer’s oeuvre, as well as being an irresistible introduction to those who have yet to discover the unique beauty and scope of Elena Kats-Chernin’s compositions.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre.
