Compositions that magnify the mercurial double-bell trumpet. Trumpeter and composer Callum G’Froerer navigates the worlds of contemporary repertoire, improvisation, and experimental performance. His electro-acoustic compositions magnify the mercurial double-bell trumpet, immersing listeners in intoxicating timbral environments. The works Charcoal 10. 2 is a sculptural and sonic exploration for double-bell trumpet, reflective surfaces, water bowls, spotlights, and pre-recorded sounds, using the walls of the Salon as a canvas for enchanting visual effects. Charcoal 17 continues G’Froerer’s explorations into incorporating spoken language and poetry into his musical language, using original and borrowed texts that confront collapsing ecosystems and the shoreline-like nature of perception. An acoustic interlude, Charcoal 18 features an uninterrupted six-minute tremolo that breathtakingly transforms beyond recognition. In Charcoal 16, G’Froerer acts as a mediator between chaos and order, with one bell of the trumpet triggering overwhelming subwoofer tones while the other bell creates shimmering metallic clouds. Combining a refined instrumental practice with generous expressive and improvisational flair, G’Froerer’s performances leave a lasting impression on listeners.
