Event Details
Co-presented with City Recital Hall Experience the brilliance of three-time GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist and composer Cécile McLorin Salvant from the United States, as she graces the stage in Sydney for an exclusive one-night performance at the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, presented by SIMA. “You get a singer like this once in a generation or two” – Wynton Marsalis The nonpareil master of jazz singing, Salvant takes the artform to new heights with an unforgettable voice and astonishing interpretive range. Under her spell, stories buried deep in the traditions of jazz, vaudeville, blues and folkloric traditions speak with new life, and burn with a crackling mystery, vulnerability and power. In the pin-drop atmosphere of the City Recital Hall, she leads a stellar quartet on an odyssey of expression, with music drawn from the critically acclaimed album Ghost Song and her latest release Mélusine. Salvant is joined by the ascendant Sullivan Fortner, described by no less than Brad Mehldau as “quietly revolutionising jazz piano playing. Actually piano playing, period.” Salvant’s searching emotional intellect tows accolades in its wake – from winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk jazz vocal competition at just 21, to receiving a Macarthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship, and a hat-trick of GRAMMY-winning albums in between – but shows no signs of slowing down. She is at once “her generation’s most imaginative and thrilling jazz interpreter” and an artist that “adheres to no genre”. Don't miss this unique opportunity to witness Cécile McLorin Salvant live in Australia. Cécile McLorin Salvant | Vocals Sullivan Fortner | Piano Yasushi Nakamura | Bass Kyle Pool | Drums
