‘One of the most unique and respected musicians in Australia’. Glam Adelaide

Bass guitarist Christopher Hale is recognised as ‘one of the most unique and respected musicians in Australia’ (Glam, Adelaide) and an ‘Australian jazz heavyweight and a brilliant, ground breaking composer’ (Rhythms magazine). Growing up playing Brazilian music and Flamenco, Hale has always involved himself in musical traditions, bringing the essence of these styles into his own unique vision. Following a chance encounter in 2011, he fell in love with traditional Korean drumming and has since been performing and studying in Korea, learning the Korean rhythm system called hohup.

Minyoung Woo is a virtuoso drummer/percussionist/composer from Seoul, mastering the demanding repertoire style of samulnori as well the mysterious and powerful shaman music. Woo’s open mind and musical curiosity have made her the most innovative traditional Korean drummer of her generation. Hale and Woo have been collaborating since 2012, and have developed a common language, drawing on ancient shaman drumming, original rhythmic structures and improvisation. The result is a mode of rhythm that reaches deep into the underlying processes of jazz and Korean music to create a new music unique to this friendship.

They will collaborate with four leading improvising musicians from across Australia, with Perth tenor saxophonist Jamie Oehlers (winner of the 2003 Montreux World Saxophone Competition), pianist Andrea Keller (a triple ARIA-winner), and trumpeter Scott Tinkler and Sydney drummer Simon Barker (who both toured internationally with their trio, Chiri, with traditional Korean vocalist Bae II-Dong).

This concert presents the debut of a new suite of music that is mysterious, complex and beautiful.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Melbourne Jazz Co-operative
