Event Details
Coro Austral presents an international concert of music spanning six centuries, including works from Australia, Europe and the Americas. Highly regarded for its performances of Spanish and Latin American music, in this concert Coro Austral departs from its usual repertoire, exploring choral works in French, German, English, Latin – and Spanish – from the 16th to 21st centuries. Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin has devised a program of captivating works that highlight the changes and connections in musical ideas over the centuries and across the oceans, and their relationship to life, love and loss. • What influence did the German Grand Master of the Baroque, JS Bach, have on Astor Piazzolla, the Argentinian Grand Master of Tango Nuevo and English composer Ethel Smyth, a champion of women’s suffrage? • How do works by Renaissance composers Alonso Lobo (Spain) and Filipe de Magalhães (Portugal) connect with more recent compositions on time, love and loss by Maurice Ravel (France), Joseph Twist and Clive Lane (Australia), Bernat Vivancos (Catalonia) and Coldplay (England)? • Do feelings of nostalgia for one’s family’s homeland (El Progreso Honduras) or the bitter-sweet remembrance of a relationship (El ultimo café – the last coffee) bring joy or tears? Audience members will find answers to these questions and more in this diverse concert of beautiful music. And after the performance everyone is invited to wine and refreshments in the adjacent hall!
Featured non-Australian music: Works by JS Bach, Alonso Lobo, Astor Piazzolla, Maurice Ravel, Electo Silva, Ethel Smyth and Bernat Vivancos
