Event Details
Humankind's fascination with the mysteries of death has remained a source of inspiration for artists since the dawn of time. Composers have created some of their most inspired works through death personified. In Franz Schubert’s most famous songs, we encounter death not as a concept, but as a character. Nearly 200 years later, Schubert’s portraits of death personified are the starting point for David Lang’s haunting song cycle ‘death speaks’ - the centrepiece of this concert. In this concert, death speaks and we speak back.
Pianist Ronan Apcar, mezzo-soprano AJ America, violinist Donica Tran and electric guitarist Ethan McAlister join forces to perform Lang’s 'death speaks', alongside other works including selections of Schubert songs, Soomin Kim’s 'I’m doing well' (a letter to Kim’s deceased grandmother), and excerpts from Oliver Messiaen’s 'Quatuor pour la fin du temps' ('Quartet for the end of time'), composed in 1940 in a World War II prisoner-of-war-camp in Görlitz.
Featured non-Australian music: Soomin Kim "I'm doing well", David Lang "death speaks"
