Des White’s Open Land - EP launch
- Date: Sunday, 2 August 2009
- Venue: Bennetts Lane Jazz Club — 25 Bennetts Lane, Melbourne, VIC
- Tickets: $15/$10
Open Land is quintet, comprising Julian Wilson (tenor saxophone), Sam Keevers (piano), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Des White (acoustic bass) and Raj Jayaweera (drums), launching its debut EP. The group was assembled to perform original compositions written by White during a 2008 tour of regional Western Australia. Originally from Perth, White has been working with many different groups around Melbourne since relocating here 4 years ago. The EP was recorded and produced by John Castle at Shed Studios this May with minimal edits and overdubs, and just a splash of sound manipulation. Combining elements of jazz and rock, the music intends to afford the musicians a chance to stretch out and extend the written themes, sonically as well as melodically. This will be one of the last opportunities to see this band before White relocates to NYC to pursue a Masters at the Manhattan School of Music.
