One a trained classical violist, and the other a DJ with a decade of experience playing some of Berlin’s coolest clubs, Kieran and Kate might appear at first to come from very different worlds. But the two share a love for a unique blend of bass music, IDM, Drum & Bass, techno and jazz—and are passionate about meshing these diverse sounds into audience-immersive, cohesive, vibrant and unexpected journeys. Kieran Welch’s musical life has been defined by searching for ways to combine his training in classical viola performance with diverse musical worlds and communities. From his unique live shows, merging live electronics and viola, to the concert series he founded a decade ago, Dots+Loops, he pairs a visceral playing style with a passion for multilayered curation, on a mission to inclusively share meaningful stories in an artistic conversation. Following a years-long incubation, his debut single In Regolith, composed by Tilman Robinson, releases this May. Naarm/Melbourne DJ Kate Miller has spent the last decade exploring different pockets of the dance space both locally and abroad, and is renowned for delivering wide-ranging sets which move across genres with fluidity. Creating an immersive experience for each context with fun at the heart of every set, her devotion to irresistible grooves and brave selections has earned her respect as a bold and emphatic selector, as well as regular slots at De School, Panorama Bar and Australia’s Cool Room. Recently finishing a Masters in Sonic Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), she returns to Meanjin/Brisbane for her first local set in over a year. Driven by the power of connection, violinist Claire Litwinowicz’s creative outputs exist in grey areas between classical and new music realms, whether that is collaborative installations, electro-acoustic compositions, improvised performance or curated contemporary classical concerts. With a curiosity for new and boundary-pushing music and considerable classical chops, her violin and loop performances immerse the audience in hypnotic, beautiful and haunting layers of sound.
