Poignant and lyrical, Quartz performs a program of great emotional depth. Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his string quartet, From My Life, in 1876 as an expression of his romantic ideals of a life in music. Comprising sketches of periods from his life, the work sways between feelings of joy and idealism and wistful reflections of youth to fragile moments of realisation as Smetana accepted his deafness.
Australian composer and soprano Shauna Beesley recently composed a profoundly moving work taking Russian modernist writer, Anna Akhmatova’s poem Requiem as her text. Written between 1935 and 1940, the poem is a lyrical cycle of elegy, lamentation and witness, which Akhmatova wrote, worked and re-worked in secret, depicting the suffering of the common people under the Stalinist terror regime.
Performers: QUARTZ with Guest Artist – Shauna Beesley, soprano
Featured non-Australian music: SMETANA String Quartet No.1 in E minor
