Event Details

Graeme Leak holds a special place in Australian music, with an original blend of work that bridges between many areas. Starting as one of the country’s leading percussion performers in the 1980s, he quickly extended into instrument invention and construction, leading him to fields of performance beyond the traditional contemporary music scene – to theatre and comedy, to community music-making events and far-flung environmental music projects across Australia.

As the inaugural Jacobena Angliss Fellow, Graeme Leak first performed a solo program for Astra at the Elm Street Hall after taking up residence in Melbourne in 1991. Since then, his work has taken him from many and varied non-urban localities to international forums for solo and ensemble performance.

Graeme Leak returns to the Astra series in a solo program that incorporates some of these diverse activities via video in ’retrospect’, as well as presenting the ‘prospect’ of new instruments, compositions and improvisations in music and theatre with associate performer Neil Thomas.
