Event Details

Following a sell-out season of The Velvet Gentlemen at this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival and the acclaimed Instructions for an Imaginary Man at the 2012 Adelaide Festival, Various People Inc are back with another innovative work, this time exploring a woman’s journey to motherhood in I See Your Beating Heart – A Mother’s Cantata at the Festival Centre’s Space Theatre for one night only on 12 July.

The lyrics are written by acclaimed UK writer Sheila Hill following her personal experience of giving birth to her son Billy. Well-known Adelaide pianist and composer Richard Chew works his magic with the musical score and is joined on stage by a formidable musical ensemble including vocalist Cheryl Pickering, who is also creative producer. Lighting/Projection Designer Nic Mollison provides accompanying projections, including images of his own new-born son Jiri to set the scene of the beautiful, intimate and haunting work.

The first part of the performance, A Woman’s Journey Through Love, presents a contemporary, playful take on 19th Century musical genius Robert Schumann’s song cycle depicting love, birth and death. Words are by Chamisso accompanied by a quirky commentary in English by Various People Inc.

Part two, I See Your Beating Heart – A Mother’s Cantata allows the musicians – three singers and piano trio (piano, violin and cello) to explore the hopes and fears around the everyday miracle of birth.
