Bourbaki's April concert consists of music by women composers from Australia, the US and the UK. All but one of the works was written in the present decade – pretty up to date even by Bourbaki standards! Christine Draeger is a frequent and welcome guest, this being her sixth performance with Bourbaki. This time she is both performer and composer, giving the world premiere of her witty and delightful concerto Three Dances for Imaginary Animals. Listen out for the reference to a well known classical song/chamber work! Maria Grenfell's Knitting Unicorns was inspired by a visit to Hobart Hospital's children's ward; a peaceful and gentle work, it was written especially for the patients there. Jessie Montgomery's Starburst is a spectacular fanfare for strings; Autumn Songs an atmospheric piece by young British composer Kate Whitley. Composed in 2004 (and therefore the earliest work on our programme), Julia Wolfe's Cruel Sister was inspired by the tale of the dark and blonde sisters in a Northumbrian ballad.
