Event Details

Many of our favourite classical music pieces were born over a hundred years ago - but as musicians we know there is a certain special energy and understanding when we can meet the composer and discuss the piece. Does the age of the composition affect the authenticity of our playing of Bruch? Would it be better if the composer was right next to us? So it is that in "Ink Games" you will witness music played from ink that is still wet. The performers will have to communicate in new and sometimes uncomfortable ways without a rehearsal. They will interpret printed marks from various sources into the world of sound, and also will convert sound into writing, showing how the two can never be untwined. The Hourglass Ensemble will also present surreal, beautiful Polish music, the exceptional gem, Bruch's double concerto, and a spectrum of recent Australian pieces from dazzling to dangerous to dreamy.

Performers: The Hourglass Ensemble: Andrew Kennedy - clarinets/artistic director Michelle Urquhart - violin/viola Ewa Kowalski - flute Gregory Kinda - piano

Featured non-Australian music: Szeligowski - flute sonata; Bruch - clarinet and viola double concerto
