Mozart’s brief, poignant and rarely programmed Masonic Funeral Music partners Hindemith’s achingly beautiful Trauermusik, his best work, commissioned for a live broadcast, following the death of George V. Mozart adds his own voice to Bach’s music, paying tribute to the master of fugue.
Australian Brett Dean’s Short Stories, five evocative abstract miniatures, serve as interludes in between. 'Devotional', a delicate hymn-like chorale, contrasts with the dark and disturbed visions of 'Premonitions'. 'Embers' depicts a dying fire giving off its final sparks in a slow, dreamy movement that explores string colours. 'Kamarov’s Last Words' refers to Soviet Cosmonaut Kamarov, the first person to die in space in 1967. 'Arietta' is a disembodied song of near-resolve.
Mahler’s great Tenth Symphony traverses an unremitting arc of emotion. Its atmospheric Adagio, an immensely spacious and gloriously scored cadence, closes a beautiful yet ethereal program.
Featured non-Australian music: Mozart, Hindemith, Mahler
