Event Details
Composer-saxophonist, Katia Beaugeais, joins forces with conductor Daryl Pratt and the Sydney Conservatorium Modern Music Ensemble to premiere her new Saxophone Concerto,Terra Obscura. Beaugeais' 'Terra Obscura: Concerto for Saxophone' is a Conservatorium Centenary commission as a result of winning the 2010 International Young Composer ISCM/IAMIC Award. Terra Obscura is inspired by the excavation and rebuilding of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The discovery of the archaeological remains uncovered during the excavation is reflected by subtle timbral variations of obscured pitch elements through the use of saxophone extended techniques. Beaugeais showcases the beautiful dream-like and lyrical sounds of the saxophone alongside captivating slap-tongue effects and circular breathing, which gradually transform into rapid, virtuosic, euphoric, celebratory passages of music.
