Event Details
Touring Australia’s festivals and key city venues, this is an exciting performance and one not to be missed.
New York-based vocalist/composer Kavita Shah has a much-acclaimed innovative approach to her music, incorporating her in-depth knowledge of diverse cultural traditions and languages (she is of Indian background and fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French) into her jazz-based repertoire.
Hailed for her “amazing dexterity for musical languages” ( NPR ), Shah is renowned for placing seemingly eclectic songs, instruments and artists in dialogue with one another. She has performed her own music at the Kennedy Center, Blue Note, Joe’s Pub, Jazz Standard, Art Basel Miami, Duc des Lombards and jazz festivals worldwide, and she has collaborated with Sheila Jordan, Martial Solal, François Moutin, Lionel Loueke, Steve Wilson, and Greg Osby.
Pianist/composer Steve Newcomb, Head of Jazz at Queensland Conservatorium, is equally in demand for his unique touch on the piano, detailed writing, and comprehensive style of arranging that explores
“a knotty zone where Thelonious Monk meets classical music” ( Sydney Morning Herald ).
He maintains an active solo career, performing in various styles with and arranging for artists such as Katie Noonan, Chris McNulty, Metropole Orkest, Roberta Gambarini, Stefon Harris, and Ben Folds. Based in Brisbane, Steve is Senior Lecturer, Head of Jazz and the Program Director of the Bachelor of Music degree at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
Since Shah and Newcomb met in 2010 as graduate students at Manhattan School of Music; they have enjoyed collaborating on several projects, including Shah’s “Visions” (2014), co-produced by Lionel Loueke, and Newcomb’s large ensemble recordings “Caterpillar Chronicles” (2013) and “Meltwater Pulse” (forthcoming 2017).
