It’s not musical yet it’s full of music; it’s full of drama, yet its simple storytelling of the kind that enthralls. When internationally acclaimed German-Australian classical guitarist Karin Schaupp approached leading Australian playwright David Williamson with the idea of acting in a play that combined her musical skills with drama Lotte’s Gift – the story of a woman of huge musical talent whose career was thwarted - is the result.

In Lotte’s Gift Karin tells the remarkable story of her grandmother Lieslotte Reinke. Born with an exceptional singing voice Lotte was passionate about music. But in surviving the war, a difficult mother-in-law, pressure from her husband, and the ultimate realisation that her dreams had slipped into the harsh reality of life, Lotte had to find courage, resilience and a joy for living. Lotte gave Karin the gift of her first guitar at the age of three and has been a source of warmth, encouragement and inspiration ever since.  Lotte ensured her granddaughter’s talent was not impeded in the same way as her own bringing an appreciation of the love only family and sacrifice can bring.

Through this exquisitely performed personal tale of three generations of women, Karin plays the music that sign-posted their lives including: Brahms, Granados, Agustín Barrios Mangoré, Georg Handel, Rodrigo, Albéniz, and Australian composer Philip Houghton.
