Event Details
The Macquarie University Sundanese Gamelan Ensemble is based in the Department of Media, Music, Cultural and Communication Studies at the North Ryde Campus. The ensemble was founded by Dr Andrew Alter in 2011 and performs popular Sundanese repertoire on instruments from Bandung, West Java, which were commissioned for the University in 2013.
Suara Jaya: Sydney Balinese Gamelan Ensemble.
Suara Jaya (Victorious Sound) exists to create, learn, teach and perform music for Balinese gamelan. The group began working together in 2014 and maintains strong links with musicians in and from Bali. Members have studied in Bali since 2009 with I Dewa Berata and the group Cudamani in the village of Pengosekan (learning Lengker, Tari Rejang Dewa, Kecak, Pudak Sari, Condong and Sidha Karya).
In 2014 and 2015 Suara Jaya worked in Sydney with Balinese musicians, I Dewa Nurjana (on Baris Tunggal) and I Made Denis. Tonight’s performance maintains the group’s aim of performing pieces from the past alongside newly composed pieces for Balinese instruments.
