Event Details
Highly respected Sydney-based international pianist/composer Mike Nock was recent recipient of the 2009 Bell ‘Hall of Fame’ award at the Australian Jazz Awards. Since his first recordings here with the legendary Three-Out Trio in 1960-61, Nock has enjoyed an amazingly fertile 50 year career, which includes credits such as Coleman Hawkins and Art Blakey, leading the pioneer fusion group The Fourth Way, and garnering praise from peers such as Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock. Not one to rest on his laurels, Nock stays ‘musically fresh’ by working with young musicians. One such protege is New York-based saxophonist Jacam Manricks, whom Nock first meet in Brisbane several years ago. It is a reflection of both Nock’s generous spirit and respect for Manrick’s talents that he agreed to accompany Manricks in his 2007 debut tour here, and again this year. Nock, together with bassist Des White and New York-based drummer Danny Fischer will mainly play Manrick’s challengingly complex originals, as well as some trio pieces.
