Miles Thomas Trio - Pen Island: Casey Golden Trio : Double Header
Event Details
Who could have thought modern jazz and entertainment would come together?
On stage humour, expressed through the music or through stage antics and costumes has a long history in jazz, perhaps exemplified best in the modern period by Sun Ra and in Australia by ensembles like the Adam Simmons Toy Band and the Hoodangers.
Pen Island present a unique approach to standards, combining an eclectic range of influences approached through the traditional piano trio format. But beyond the eccentic antics there is musicianship of a high order from pianist Gerard Masters, bassist Brett Hirst and making his debut for SIMA, drummer Miles Thomas.
Casey Golden is one of the most exciting young voices on the Sydney jazz scene. He released his debut album, Clarity, in 2010 to favorable critical and public recognition. For his SIMA debut tonight, he’ll be joined by his frequent collaborators in Bill Williams (bass) and Ed Rodrigues (drums). Continually growing as interesting and individual musicians in their own right, the trio have also developed a strong rapport over the last few years of playing and practicing together.
