Event Details

The Orava String Quartet, one of Australia’s most exciting new string quartets is performing a mix of the old and the new with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet no. 2 and Australian composer Paul Halley’s “Winter” quartet, “Angel” and “The Hand Of Fate”.

"The music of Paul Halley comes from the heart. Its appeal is immediate and speaks to a wide audience, as he is able to convey a wide range of emotion and mood in his music. " Ann Carr-Boyd October 2011

"With my compositions, I aim for something very difficult - to please every member of the audience and to have my music hold its own with the traditional classics on the programme"
- Paul Halley

The Orava String Quartet, one of Australia’s newest and most exciting string quartets will perform a combination of the old and the new in a concert that brings together a classical masterpiece with works by Australian composer Paul Halley.

Paul Halley is a rapidly rising composer with a “modern romantic” style full of vital rhythm, dramatic intensity and abundant melody. Possessing a style that audiences are finding easy to listen to while being richly rewarding, Paul Halley will be making his Sydney Opera House debut with the Orava String Quartet performing his String Quartet no 2 in e minor- the "Winter" quartet, along with "Angel" and "The Hand of Fate".

Influenced more by the great masters than by contemporary composers, Paul Halley seems to have found a natural balance between tradition and innovation.

Also featured is Mendelssohns String Quartet no 2 in A minor – a popular early quartet of Mendelssohn’s which draws a lot of its inspiration from Beethoven’s late quartets.
