Event Details

Syzygy 2018 – Hommage à M. Debussy Claude Debussy is widely regarded as the father of modern classical music. In the centenary year of his death, Syzygy takes the final three sonatas of Debussy as points of departure for three concerts that explore the fantastical and multi-faceted contemporary legacy of this bold, exploratory musician. In the pioneering spirit of Debussy, we also include a newly-commissioned Australian work in each concert.

Concert 1. Pagan Dances Beginning with the first of Debussy’s three sonatas, we survey the last one hundred years of dance music. In Debussy’s masterful trio we dance for sensual pleasure while in Jolivet’s ‘Alla Rustica’ we do a pagan dance to usher in plentiful crops for the coming season. Finally, we throb to the sounds of the Paris underground with Mantovani’s epic and wildly hedonistic ‘Rave Party’. This concert also features a fascinating new work by Australian composer Emile Frankel.
