(An) exceptionally individualistic composer and superb improviser… The New Yorker

Phillip Johnston is an American saxophonist/composer who lives in Sydney, while still maintaining a musical life in his hometown of New York City. He will be performing new music developed for his March residency at John Zorn’s NYC performance space, The Stone. His most recent CD, Manhattan Moonrise with the Microscopic Septet, was listed on many ‘best of’ lists for 2014, and described by the New York City Jazz Record as, “deep-content art music with a strong sense of humor and swing”.

Recent performances of his score for Lotte Reineger’s 1926 silent film The Adventures of Prince Achmed include the Sydney Vivid Festival and MONA FOMA 2015. He has recently completed an 8-city US tour of Wordless!, his collaboration with Art Spiegelman, which premiered at the Sydney Opera House in 2013.

Performers: Phillip Johnston (soprano saxophone), Alister Spence (piano/keyboard), Lloyd Swanton (bass), Nic Cecire (drums)
