Phillip Johnston & the Coolerators

Phillip Johnston has led Phillip Johnston & the Coolerators in one form or another since moving to Australia in 2005. Their 2018 release, Diggin’ Bones has received rave reviews in Australia, the US and Europe, and regular airplay on Sydney’s jazz radio stations.

The band brings together two of Australia’s most internationally acclaimed touring musicians, Alister Spence (Alister Spence Trio, Clarion Fracture Zone, AAO) and Lloyd Swanton (The Necks, the catholics) with one of Sydney’s most in-demand rhythm section players, Nic Cecire.

The Alister Spence Trio

Over 20 years the Alister Spence Trio have built a distinctive world of sound based around Alister’s compositions; establishing a strong national and international reputation, with performances including Tokyo International Jazz Festival, Montreal and Vancouver International Jazz festivals, and Vivid Festival Sydney (curated by Brian Eno, 2009).

The band has been twice nominated for an ARIA Award (Best Jazz album 2004, 2007), and an APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award (Excellence in Jazz, 2018). The trio’s most recent album Not Everything but Enough was voted by Music Magazine, Japan, in the top 10 jazz releases worldwide for 2017. A new album featuring Ed Kuepper is now recorded and will be released in early 2020.
