Finnish singer and composer Sanna Ruohoniemi is the latest in a long line of strikingly individual Nordic artists who successfully melds the open-sky freedom of jazz with the rich folk traditions of their homeland. Considered Finland’s best young singer, Sanna is known for her improvisational verve and creative risk-taking. Her talent was evident on her critically-acclaimed debut album Tales of a Stranger (2016), which featured four Swedish musicians from Stockholm’s thriving jazz scene. Her latest release Start from Nothing (2018) continues her bold and self-determined journey into the possibilities of vocal jazz, with critics praising her ambition and stylistic diversity.
