Part 1 Experimental Music for One Percussionist

New works by Kate Moore, Cat Hope and James Hullick. Explorations in the sonic, visual and electronic arts converge as the definition of a percussion instrument and its performance practice is interrogated. Percussion more akin to painting, fluid and textural, yet still rhythmic and bold and tactile. COOL PERTH NIGHTS

Part 2 Scatterman

Scatterman is part music theatre, part cutting edge sonic art performance. Scatterman is for amplified prepared piano, electronics (including synths and other gadgets) and voice and explores the mindset of a man in his 40s going through a post relationship break-up psychosis.

James Hullick is a composer, community arts worker, sound artist and producer who exists at the forefront of international sonic arts creation and presentation. James’ sonic practice is wide-ranging. James’ work is characterised by an unusual ability to use sound to engage in social issues. His projects have been presented internationally for a variety of ensembles and electronic formats. Innovative sonic terrains that James continues to work through include: recursive compositional techniques, perceptual music making, real time scores, sound making machines and community arts projects. James founded JOLT (2008) and has artistically directed many projects since that time. JOLT projects and festivals have taken place internationally in the US, Japan, China, Europe and the UK. James recently completed a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Melbourne. He was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship (2015) and received the Michael Kieran Harvey Piano Scholarship (2015-16).

Louise Devenish is a percussionist whose practice incorporates performance, research and education. Her work with contemporary, world and interdisciplinary ensembles includes co-directing The Sound Collectors, percussing for electro-acoustic sextet Decibel (WA) and performing boundary-pushing new percussion projects with Speak Percussion (Vic). An advocate of Australian music, Louise has commissioned over 45 works, including the solo recital series Music for One Percussionist comprising new works by living Australian composers. She regularly performs throughout Australasia, Europe, North America and the UK; highlights include performances at the Nagoya and Shanghai World Expos, Ojai Music Festival, Tage für Neue Musik Zurich, The Barbican Sound Unbound and Tongyeong International Music Festival. Louise is Head of Percussion at the University of Western Australia School of Music, where she also teaches world music and music research, and is a lecturer for the acting and music departments at WA Academy of Performing Arts. She has recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts and her research in Australian music, composer-performer collaboration and percussion performance practice is published in Musicology Australia, Percussive Notes and PERCUSscene.
