SIMA welcomes the return of acclaimed German-born musician and composer, Matthias Schubert. Described as the 'high maestre' of the tenor saxophone and well-acknowledged throughout Europe and US, he has been recorded on more than 60 recordings, and has collaborated during the last three decades with many of the finest players in improvised music, from Barry Altschul to Michael Zerang, and many in between. If you've ever seen him on stage, you'll hardly forget his performance. His extremely powerful playing, the richness of ideas in his improvisations and his inspired compositions give him a prime position in Jazz. His last SIMA performance was in 1993 with the touring, 'retro-punk' jazz band, The Jungle Pilots. Here and now, and as a new resident, he will explore a fresh alchemy with two of Australia's finest... Lloyd Swanton on bass and James Waples on drums.
