TRIGGER: Melissa Mony Quartet (9pm)

Trigger is a new initiative which pairs leading jazz musician with a selected emerging artist to bring-alive original compositions.

Our inaugural Trigger artist is Melissa Mony. Melissa is rapidly developing a reputation as an exciting young soloist and composer. A recent graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studied under notable Australian jazz musicians including Sandy Evans, Judy Bailey and Dave Theak. She now performs regularly with the Sirens Big Band, The Band Bajaa and her own quartet at a variety of local jazz festivals and venues.

Having spent parts of her life variably in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Great Britain and France, Melissa draws inspiration for her compositions and concepts from the natural and man-made environments she has encountered. “I seek to create soundscapes that evoke the feeling of a place at a particular moment in time. Aural scenes on which I can freely improvise new melodies and harmonies, whilst still capturing the characteristics of the original inspiration. Tonight Melissa is performing her own compositions.

Support Act: Matt McMahon (8pm) Freedman Jazz Fellow and National Jazz Award winner Matt McMahon is one of Australia’s most revered jazz pianists. Matt’s solo piano features imaginative improvisations that celebrate his diverse musical background and love of piano in all of its forms.
