Event Details

Mythology and the natural world has been a source of inspiration for generations of artists.

Despite the modern world’s fast-paced existence particularly since the industrial revolution, these themes continue to intrigue and excite the human mind. This proposed program performed by Six Degrees Ensemble and guest artists is formed around the astounding Garden of Earthly Desire, a chamber ensemble piece by Melbourne-born/UK-based composer Liza Lim. The work is based on the most famous work of 15th century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, a triptych that presents a sequence of scenes depicting the beginning and end of time; from Adam and Eve to a fiery Hell ending, with the Garden of Delights radiating in the centre.

The concert will begin with the luminous The Heavenly Spheres Are Illuminated by Lights by Japanese composer Somei Satoh. A central element in all Japanese philosophy (Shintoism, one of the main religious and philosophical practices in Japan) is its deep respect for nature. It is understood that in the Japanese musical sense, there is no strict distinction made between the sounds of nature and the sounds of music. Satoh’s music has been said to attempt “a kind of therapy in which the physical and the spiritual blend.”
