Event Details
Cello and piano recital by Australian cellist Thomas Rann and French pianist Jeremy Eskenazi featuring inspiring works by Australian composer Alicia Grant and Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke, alongside the sublime Chopin cello sonata.
This concert features Chopin's swansong, the awe-inspiring cello sonata in G minor op.65 (1846) - one of the few chamber works by the famous Polish composer. It is presented here alongside two modern multi-movement works: Three Magic Pieces (2007), by Australian composer Alicia Grant, and the Sonata for Cello and Piano No 1 by Soviet composer Afred Schnittke (1978).
Australian cellist Thomas Rann has been regularly performing at the Independent Theatre this year, notably as cellist of the Australia Quartet (UTS quartet in residence), of which he is the founder. In this concert, he is joined by French pianist Jeremy Eskenazi in this ambitious programme combining high virtuosity and emotional depth. All three works performed here have been chosen for their inspiring qualities and breadth of musical expression.
Featured non-Australian music: Schnittke, Chopin
